Home remodeling is big business in San Diego and across the USA, with American residents having spent an estimated 326.1 billion dollars on remodeling their homes in 2019. While some people may remodel their homes just because they want them to look a certain way, for a certain demographic the desire to remodel might be more serious. Read on to discover why seniors might need to remodel their homes and the financial options that are available to make it happen.
Why do seniors need to remodel their homes?
According to the National Council on Aging, every 19 minutes an older adult dies from a fall. For seniors, falling down the stairs or in the shower is a big fear. The solution might appear to be to move to an old people’s home or to a bungalow. But for many seniors, this would destroy their happiness or their are practical reasons preventing them from moving such as the proximity of friends and family or difficulties of selling a property. For these individuals, remodeling their home to make it easier to move around and as close as possible to being ‘fall proof’ is often the best option.
Crowd-funding
If your family and friends know how important it is for you to remodel your home, why not try crowd-funding? Though it may feel like begging, these days crowd-funding has become a perfectly acceptable way to raise money online, and many worth individuals are benefitting. San Diego has many crowd-funding companies that can help you or you could try international brands such as Go Fund Me.
Reverse mortgages
One of the perks of being a senior is that there are financial options available to you that might not be available to the general public. For example, a reverse mortgage is a loan available to homeowners over 62 that allows them to convert part of the equity in their homes into cash. Although the program was designed to help older adults with limited income meet their living expenses, there is no actual restriction on how the money must be used, meaning you are free to use it to to remodel your home.
For many seniors who are unwilling and unable to move out of their homes, remodeling might be the best option. Remodeling can be expensive but luckily there are many choices available to get your money. Use all available resources, shop around and get the home you deserve.
