Let’s have a look at how traveling impact your period and what can be done to beat the symptoms.
Can traveling affect your period?
When you have your period, you experience changes in your body that create a certain level of discomfort. There are symptoms that accompany menstruation, but these symptoms are considered minor.
The problem is the severity of the symptoms. Some women experience symptoms that are so severe, they cannot even get out of bed for a day or two. Others, well, they may experience some symptoms, but the symptoms may be mild.
If you normally experience severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea, headaches, joint pains, and fatigue when you are on your period, traveling would be the last thing on your mind.
But it is possible to travel when you are on your period. If you experience severe symptoms when you are menstruating and you have to travel, take ibuprofen, paracetamol or some other type of painkiller that can help provide some relief. Also, carry a heat soother patch or a hot water bottle to ease your cramps.
Tips on how to make your travel comfortable when you are on your periods

Pack comfy clothing
No matter how much you like to dress up when you are on your period, you need to be comfortable. And that is not going to happen if you are wearing a short swanky dress with 6-inch heels. More so if you are traveling.
So if you are on your period and you plan on traveling, pack clothes that are comfortable. Clothing such as leggings, sweatshirts, flowy dresses or shorts should do the trick.
Pack accordingly
If you are traveling to a developed country, you don’t need to carry a lot of supplies with you since you are more likely to find what you need there.
But if you are traveling to less a developed country, you might want to make sure that you have packed enough supplies to last you the duration of your trip. This is because the type of brand you use when you are on your menses may not be available.
There is also the issue of where you are traveling to. If you are going to a remote location, think about how difficult it may be to get supplies.

Consider skipping your period
If you are traveling to some remote area and you plan on staying there for a month or two, skipping your period may be an ideal option. There are contraception pills that can extend the length of time of your next period by twelve weeks.
But keep in mind that taking a pill may not necessarily stop your period. Travel-related stress, diet, and altitude may cause your period to start. Therefore carry a supply of what you use (menstrual cap/tampons/pads) when you are on your menses just in case.
Drink plenty of water and eat healthy snacks
When you are traveling and you are on your period, make sure to drink plenty of water as dehydration worsens abdominal cramps. Also, eat fruits, nuts, and other healthy snacks. Avoid sodas and junk food as they may worsen your symptoms and increase your discomfort.
Always carry a period kit
It is up to you what you want to have in your period kit, but here are some essentials you may need to include:
- Wet wipes or hand sanitizer
- Plastic bags
- Tissues
- Refillable water bottle
- Menstrual cups, tampons, and/or pads
Enjoy yourself
If you are on holiday and your period starts, it can get you in a mood. But don’t let this ruin your holiday mood or your holiday. If you are well prepared, you shouldn’t worry and you should be able to enjoy some fun activities including swimming and hiking.
