Having a clean and tidy bedroom has been proven to help secure a better night's sleep and reduce stress and anxiety at bedtime. Yet, it can often be challenging to keep your room clutter-free when you're using the room for multiple purposes or sharing the space with another person.
There are some simple steps you can take, though, that will maximize the space in your bedroom, giving both you and your mind more space to relax.
1. Keep the Layout Simple
We all get bored with our home decor from time to time but try not to overcomplicate the layout of your bedroom as it could disrupt the natural feng shui that helps you get a good night's sleep. Try not to push the bed up against one wall as this will make it difficult to get in and out of two people. It will also make it challenging to make the bed if you choose to.
2. Invest in Space Saving Furniture
Look out for multi-functional furniture that allows you to save a bit of space by utilizing an extra storage option. Places like the Divan Bed Center offer a wide range of smart storage beds, from Ottomans to withdraws in the base. These can be useful for storing things like bed-lined towels, shoes, and seasonal clothing.
3. Let There be Light!
Natural light can do wonders for a small space, helping it to feel more open and relaxing. If you don't have many windows in the room, try adding some artificial light. While ceiling lights do the trick, you could also install spotlights, add some lamps or a wall light on either side of the bed. Mirrors are also great at reflecting the light and should be placed opposite a light source for maximum impact.
4. Consider the Decor
Getting the decor right in your bedroom can make all the difference to space perception. Painting the walls white will certainly make the space seem bigger, but it may also make the room feel clinical and difficult to fall asleep in. Opt for neutral tones like soft blues and greys. Too much color could make the space seem like a pop-art gallery and cause sleep difficulties.
5. Create an Illusion
If you don't have any more space to work with, you can always create the illusion instead. Simple tricks like hanging your curtains a little higher than usual and letting them fall to the floor made an illusion of higher ceilings. It would be best if you also tried to match the color of the curtains to the wall to create a more spacy feel.
6. Get Rid of Clutter
Getting rid of things can be challenging, but keeping too many things can cause mental stress, taking up space in your mind and your rooms. If you can, try to keep your bedroom for one purpose, this helps to minimize the number of things stored there.
7. Incorporate the Outdoors
Experiencing the outdoors has a calming effect on people and can help you to fall asleep faster. Try bringing the outdoors into your room with natural wooden furniture, lots of natural light, and indoor plants.
The Effect a Clean Room Has on Sleep
Studies have found that people who have a more cluttered bedroom take longer to fall asleep than people with tidy rooms. Poor quality sleep is known to cause several health problems, including stress, decreased cognitive function, lack of concentration, and reduced emotional stamina.
Overall, it can be a challenge to create a tidy bedroom, but by following the above steps, you'll be able to create a peaceful space where you can drift off to sleep in no time.
