Foul smell can be a major setback when it comes to relaxing at home. Unfortunately, fragrance or room fresheners can’t help much unless you tackle the cause!
Especially, odors that emanate from septic tanks and garbage disposals are highly unpleasant. To deal with these and deodorise your room is the only way out.
So, it is time for you to locate the sources of bad smell in your home!
1. Garbage Disposal
Wondering, “Why does my house smell?”?
The first place you should check is the garbage disposal.
If you haven’t been cleaning your bin effectively, there is a good chance that it has accumulated odor-causing bacteria and has started to stink.
Some opt to put baking soda into the bin so that it absorbs the bad scent. Also, be mindful not to put perishable and smelly things like meat and fish.
A preferred way to prevent bad smells is to rinse the bin with soap and water and then leave it to dry. You can use bleach and lemon slices to put an end to the bacteria and bring a fresh aroma.
2. Washing Machine
Is there a stagnant water smell permeating your house?
If your answer is yes, better take a look at your washing machine.
Bad odors from washing machines are a result of irregular cleaning. Multiple factors, such as detergent overload, build-up of fabric softeners, and water held in door seals and gaskets, contribute to the stink.
Deep cleaning the drum, detergent drawer, and agitator helps tackle molds, odors, and ultimately improves wash quality.
3. New Furniture
Have you experienced headaches, dizziness, or an itch in the throat after you bring in a new sofa or cabinet?
You might want to watch out for the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) being released into the air because of the new furniture.
Common in mold, upholstered furniture, and cleaning supplies, this organic compound has a high vapour pressure at room temperature.
Thus, a good ventilation system is a must to prevent any health issues that might arise from VOCs.
4. Sewer Smell
If it’s been a long time since your last septic inspection, you might want to consider sewer smell as an obvious reason why your homes smell bad.
Usually, this signature rotten-egg-like odor tends to disperse quickly. But if it persists, you are facing a serious plumbing problem that can lead to health hazards.
Sewage smells due to septic tank issues in your kitchen, bathroom, or laundry area need immediate attention. The presence of methane in the gas produced from sewage, if present in large amounts, is considered highly flammable.
In such cases, do not waste time. Check for leaks and call your plumber!
5. Stinky Fridge
Spoilt food and bad cleaning are probably the only two reasons why your fridge smells horrible.
mold, food spills, and bacteria produce the bad odor. So first, get rid of the expired items and leaking containers.
Secondly, clean your fridge often. It’s easy! You only need warm water, dish soap, and a wash towel to do this.
Your refrigerator is an essential part of your everyday life. If it smells fresh, it means your food is fresh too.
6. Mold
Removing mold is key to keeping your home smelling fresh.
While mold spores are present in the air, they need moisture to breed. This is why a musty smell, caused by the mold, is mostly found in the bathroom, laundry room, or kitchen.
If left unattended, this bad odor can make the indoor environment unhealthy. It subjects the family members to respiratory issues and allergic reactions.
Moreover, it can damage walls, the ceiling, and doors, leaving your precious home in need of costly repairs!
Nobody wants to stay at a home that smells like rotten eggs or smoke.
By using odor eliminators, following a cleaning routine, and timely septic inspection, you can eliminate bad scents that have been hanging around for a long time.
While getting rid of bad odor might be easy, it’s best to take precautions!
