The 87th Academy Awards: The Fashion in Review

Yesterday evening, the 87^th Academy Awards, or Oscars, debuted to an eager, international audience. As the award show’s ostentatious host, Neil Patrick Harris helmed the ship, opening the night with a musical number featuring Anna Kendrick and Jack Black. Harris sang and danced a spectacular ode to cinema, with his performance of the song "Moving Pictures" co-written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez—the duo behind Frozen hit "Let It Go." Patricia Arquette’s subsequent ‘Best Supporting Actress’ acceptance speech for Boyhood, advocating for women’s wages, only served to further encourage the audience—as is evidenced by Meryl Streep fist-pumping to the tune of economic equality.

Eventually, the high-energy ebbed a bit allowing for a slew of presentments, acceptance speeches, and endearing performances by musicians: Rita Ora; Jennifer Hudson; the Common/John Legend duo; and, in my opinion the most talented artist of the night, Lady Gaga.

The big winners of the evening? Birdman for Best Picture; Alejandro González Iñárritu for Best Director in Birdman; Julianne Moore for Best Actress in Still Alice; and Eddie Redmayne for Best Actor in The Theory of Everything.

However, a show-of-sorts occurred before the actual Academy Awards show—the red carpet. Although the velvet wasn’t as bloodied as seasons past (think Angelina Jolie’s leg in a black Versace gown at the 2012 Oscars), the stars served up sincere style, and others, well, missed the mark. But that’s okay, because there’s always next year…

Lupita Nyong’o was a vision in a breathtaking, pearl-accented Calvin Klein gown.

Gone Girl actress, Rosamund Pike was divine in a sultry red lace Givenchy number (my favorite ensemble of the evening).

Birdman actress Emma Stone dazzled in a slinky, chartreuse Eli Saab gown.

Margot Robbie absolutely stunned in a black, plunging sheer-sleeve Saint Laurent gown, and vintage Van Cleefs & Arpels necklace.
