When we think about nasal congestion, it’s usually a stuffy nose associated with the common cold or seasonal allergies like hay fever. However, what might seem like an annoyance for most people can quickly escalate into a huge health concern for others if left untreated. For instance, congestion can lead to painful sinus infections. If such problems persist over the long term, then it may be worth looking at receiving professional nasal treatments from a specialist. However, before you seek medical advice, you may be wise to try out a few DIY solutions which may alleviate the discomfort.
Stay Hydrated
Drinking water is a generally beneficial practice for the body and your health as a whole, but it is even more critical if your nasal passages are congested. Increasing available water intake is good, but hot drinks and sports drinks with electrolytes are also viable options. The liquid will help push fluids out of the nose, decreasing inflammation and pressure on your sinuses. It is a good idea to stay hydrated if you are feeling under the weather with a stuffy nose.
Use a Saline Nasal Spray
A homemade saltwater solution has long been a popular remedy for the common cold, as it increases moisture in the nostrils and subsequently thins out mucus making it. This helps to reduce inflammation. However, some saline sprays contain decongestant medication, so it’s wise to seek medical advice before using them, as they can have some adverse side effects.
Drain Your Sinuses
Using a neti pot to flush fluids through the nasal passages using clean water may also help alleviate nasal congestion. Getting water to flow through one nostril and out of the other can be highly uncomfortable, but the short-term discomfort will provide you with relief in the long term.
Invest in a Humidifiers
Humidifiers are a tried and tested solution for reducing sinus pain and relieving the irritation caused by a blocked nose. These devices increase humidity in a room by turning water to moisture as it gradually fills the air. Inhaling this moist air tends to help soothe irritation caused by the inflammation of the nasal passages. Furthermore, certain essential oils can also assist with relieving pain and making it easier to breathe.
Take a Hot Shower
Many people find that taking a hot shower helps relieve a stuffy nose by making it easier for you to breathe. In addition, steam from the shower thins the mucus in your nasal passage and reduces pain. Although this isn’t a permanent solution, it will provide a degree of relief without any additional pain or discomfort.
Using a few of these home remedies may offer some relief for your nasal congestion. Teamed with over-the-counter medications, they may even solve the problem completely. However, do be mindful of side effects when using medicine and speak with your pharmacist before you take anything. Don’t expect DIY solutions to work overnight either, though, and give yourself about five days to see if there has been any change. If you find that nasal congestion persists, seek medical support to rule out anything more serious.
