There are quite a few oral health issues we can run into at some point in our lives. The most common are fended off by following a toothbrushing and flossing routine at least twice a day, and that’s something we learn from a young age.
However, some oral health issues get forgotten about - despite the fact that they’re just as common as having misaligned teeth and needing braces, having wisdom teeth come through, or wanting to get your teeth whitened.
But it’s important to always keep these issues in mind as well! Not only will it help you protect your oral health against them, but because they can also be signs of deeper issues. Always check with the dentist if you’re battling any of these below.

Halitosis
Yes, bad breath is an oral health issue! For most people it’s just something to battle with first thing in the morning, but it can become more chronic if you don’t keep your mouth clean.
Halitosis can sometimes be a sign of something else going on with your health too. For example, a person with untreated diabetes may have ‘fruity’ smelling breath on a regular basis.
If this is the case, it would be best to seek medical advice and ensure you’re not dealing with a more serious underlying cause.
Losing a Tooth
Losing a tooth is quite common, and more people have had one or two either knocked out or pulled as a result of an oral health issue or an accident. It can be quite easy to have a tooth knocked out of place, and then need it to be removed or reset. In some cases, people require the removal of multiple teeth, and have dental implants put in instead.
To help prevent your chances of losing a tooth, make sure you keep up with your oral hygiene routine, for one, but also keep your mouth protected as much as possible. For example, if you’re going to take part in a martial art, never forget to pack your mouthguard before class!
Gum Disease
When taking care of your teeth, it’s easy to forget about the gums that keep them firmly and securely in place. Your gums are some pretty key elements in your mouth, and when they're not in good shape, your oral health can suffer.
Gum disease is quite prevalent around the world, but it’s not often talked about. Most people focus on teeth issues alone, even when the cause of these could be gum related. Having a tooth ache, for example, could mean there’s an issue in the gum tissue, rather than the tooth’s root.
All in all, when taking care of your teeth, don’t forget to keep an eye out for signs of poor gum health too!
If you want to keep your oral health in check, don’t forget about the potential issues above and how they could happen to you. See the dentist, brush your teeth, and watch for signs of gum disease.
