If you plan to add them to your home aquarium, you need to be aware of some of the caring tips to give them an excellent environment to live and breed. Here is what you need to know:
Picking the perfect tank size for the ghost shrimps:
As the ghost shrimps are part of the dwarf group, they are tiny in size and appearance. The tank size doesn't need to be too large to keep ghost shrimp. A small or medium tank is enough to give them a proper environment to grow and breed.
If you plan to keep a single ghost shrimp, then a tank with the 2 gallons' capacity can provide enough space. For a ghost shrimp group, you need to consider 5-6 gallons of the tank to give them better water quality for healthy growth.
Proper tank assortments:
For offering healthy growth, you need proper assortments to create a suitable environment for the ghost shrimps. These creatures tend to hide behind the plants and rocks.
Keeping that in mind, start with decorating your tank with enough fake plants, rocks, artificial caves, and driftwood so that they can easily hide while molting.
There is no need to offer any particular type of substrates. Regular sand or planted substrate is enough to serve the purpose. Since they have a clear appearance adding a dark substrate can improve their visibility.
The arrangements of light don't offer much change to the environment for the fishes or shrimps. Any bright or dim light goes compatible with the ghost shrimps. All they need is enough places to hide when they want.
Filtration and water parameters:
Maintaining healthy water is of supreme importance for your ghost shrimp pets. And a good filter ensures the better condition of the water. Choose a filter that eliminates the ammonia and nitrate from the water while providing adequate nitrogen for keeping a healthy environment.
Besides that, the filtration rate should be accurate for the water tank's capacity. Using a high capacity filter can be harmful to your shrimps. Using a sponge filter is the best way to take care of them.
Besides that, the ideal water parameter should be meeting all the conditions. It should have 0 ammonia and nitrite, 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature 7-8 pH, and <20 ppm of nitrate to keep them safe and healthy.
Diet for the ghost shrimps:
Ghost shrimps are omnivores, so you can give them flake food, algae wafers, blood worms, blanched veggies, leaves, etc., which are best for their growth. There is no need to feed them too much frequently. They are messy eaters and eat the given food within 4-5 hours. Providing them four times a week is enough.
Suitable mates for ghost shrimps:
Choose the mates who are small in size to gulp ghost shrimp and calm in nature. Otherwise, big fishes will quickly eat them. Tiny fishes like betta, tetras, guppies, mystery snails, Otoclinus catfish can be their best roommates as they are as small as shrimps and not so trouble making.
Conclusion:
The interesting behavior of grazing and plants or hiding with shyness from the light seems way too much adorable to any fish lover. Taking the best care for them is essential to grow them and keep them happy. Just make sure you have cycled your tank properly before adding shrimps to your tank.
