Zagreb, Croatia
During the colder months, central squares across Europe are transformed into magical Christmas markets that are ripe for exploring. Croatia’s capital, Zagreb, has held the title; European Best Christmas Market, for years. The celebrations begin with the illumination of lights on December 2nd and will continue until January 7th. Enjoy the music and dance performances in Jelacic Square, and browse the market stalls in nearby Zrinjevac Park. Browse the handspun mittens and scarves, or sample the cured meats from friendly local vendors. The ice park in Tomislavac square is the perfect spot to strap on a pair of skates and enjoy some classic winter fun. Afterward, warm up with a mug of hot chocolate, or a craft beer at Stross Martre, where tiny kiosks exude fairytale charm. Finally make your way to the cobbled streets where Fuliranje takes place, which translates literally to "fooling around". Indulge in the fresh sausages and mulled wine on Tomiceva street, where chefs from around the world gather to sample their creations. On nearby Kurelceva street, the DJs throw it back to the 50s, spinning old-time classics up and down the block. During your visit, spoil yourself in these luxury rentals and feel like you are in heaven.
Hokkaido, Japan
For the "land of the rising sun", Japan can get a lot of snow. Hokkaido, its second-largest island, is shrouded in a crisp blanket of snow during the winter months. With a much lower population density, a trip to Hokkaido is the ideal way to spend a peaceful, cozy holiday. Skiers and snowboarders will love the powdery slopes of Niseko Annupuri, a mountain resort area popular worldwide. With an ever-growing crowd from all over the world, the town has also developed a lively bar and dining scene. The very best part of this alpine village, however, is the natural hot springs, which run underground. All the major hotels offer naturally heated soaking, with expansive mountain views. In the island's capital, Sapporo, the festivities continue. Stroll through Odori Park, and take in the magnificent snow and ice sculptures, reflecting thousands of tiny lights. Bring the kids to Tsudome, where the sculptures are actually usable slides! About 50 miles south of Sapporo, in Tayako the streets are glowing with phosphorescence. The tunnel of lights in Nigiwai Plaza will make you feel as though you are strolling down the Milky Way. Meanwhile, on the eastern coast, in the Tokachi area, a seasonal village of ice is erected on Lake Shikaribetsu. Made up of numerous igloos, the town has a bar, and open-air baths, fed by natural hot springs. Travelers can soak in the steaming waters while taking in the world of white around them.
Sydney, Australia
If you're more interested in the sunshine than snowmen, Australia will deliver the very best. With summer beginning in December, this country offers an excellent escape from the mind-numbing cold. Australia's capital, Sydney, is a bustling harbor city, with access to some world-class beaches. Home of the famous Sydney Opera House, with its iconic sail-shaped structure, this city is packed with sights and experiences for every individual. Those feeling particularly brave can take the daring trek over the Sydney Harbor Bridge, reaching an impressive 135 meters above the water. To really appreciate the seaside, take the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk, which stretches for five miles past tide pools, along cliffs and sandy stretches of beach. Visit the Sydney Aquarium and say hello to the majestic emperor penguins, or enjoy the thrills at Luna Park, an old style fairground. For all your shopping needs, visit George Street, with elaborate decorative displays and a tree to put you in the spirit.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
With mellow Portuguese conversations in the background or some bossa nova melodies in your ears, why not let the sun kiss your skin while walking on the beach in Rio in this winter? The average temperature during this time of year ranges from 77 to 84 degrees, and visiting in January is an invitation from Rio’s name itself since Janeiro actually means January in Portuguese. Tijuca Rain Forest is ideal for a morning tour of a remarkable national park where you can spot monkeys, birds, and even sloths uniquely native to Brazil. Copacabana and Ipanema beaches already have a world-renowned reputation, so make sure to leave your footprints in the warm sand. Get in the mood for more walking tours since the city is offering plenty which is a great way to learn more about the culture and history of Rio de Janeiro.
Cape Town, South Africa
There is no better time to explore Cape Town to the fullest than to go during South Africa’s summer or North America’s winter. Even if you plan a relaxing vacation without doing too many activities, hiking up to Table Mountain is an absolute must! It’s believed to be one of the oldest mountains in the world, one of the most visited spots in South Africa, and the most popular landmark in all of Africa. If you’re up for it, Cape Town residents recommend taking a helicopter tour or even paragliding to catch the city’s best view. Cape Town’s beaches are home to the African Penguins, formerly known as jackass penguins because of their distinctive braying, which you can spot (and get close to) while they’re playing around or relaxing on the soft white sand.
