To integrate modern style into this Spanish family home, innovative, creative and functional design come together to create a unique experience for the buyer. Inspired by the bold and spicy color and flavor of sangria, and cooled by a muted blend of linen and crisp white, the fabrics, artwork, and accessories make a daring statement in the space. The eye-catching light fixtures mounted on the mirrored wall above the Dining Room banquette seating makes a stunning impact. Accents of traditional heavily-carved Spanish furniture blended with the clean lines and comfortable upholstery create a striking combination.

When it comes to a coastal palette, blue and white is the go-to color combination for creating that "beach cottage look" with a splash of style. So, when designer Peter Karoll took on the remodel of this La Jolla home, he knew exactly how the kitchen should look. The cabinetry would be crisp white, the walls pale blue, along with touches of sea grass and nautical accents. And by opening the space up to the living room, adding an island and vaulting the ceiling, Karoll created a room that was both spacious and cozy all at the same time.

Once the decision to remodel the kitchen had been made, the goal of this project was to make the most use of limited space. So, when designer Peter Karoll began planning, giving this active family of four in La Jolla plenty of growing room was as important as making it look good. Instead of a typical walk-in pantry, space was redesigned with a wall of deep cabinets and a cubby-hole desk at one end which allowed for an island large enough to suit everyone. The end result was extremely functional with an equal measure of style.

In a twist of fate, the kitchen counters and island bar of polished silver grey marble coupled with the deep red teak Italian cabinets create a dramatic set to food preparation and pre-dinner gatherings. Overflowing to a spacious family/breakfast room and pool terrace, the space functions as the epitome of family living. When this La Jolla home of more than 10,000 square feet is entertaining formally, leather-clad sliding doors enclose the space to contain full catering functions and facilitates elegant party service for modern family-friendly celebrations. It was designed by Island Architects’ Tony Crisafi, AIA, with interiors by Diarq Diseno y Arquitectura.

The democracy of today’s modern family has evolved from the days of the Cleavers, and the Anderson’s in "Father Knows Best." The seven-foot square table offers various seating arrangements, with no clear choice for the head of the family. This dining room also wants to be a more frequent place for active family living by breaking free from its more typical formal ancestor. The east wall of glass opens directly onto an open courtyard, and to the south, another frameless glass wall opens to the pool terrace and gardens. The chandelier has given way to a sculptural onyx multi-cube ceiling that glows down onto the feast and activities of the evening’s dinners. The light colored honed limestone plank floors and the suggestively pearlescent wall finish round out the feeling of the bright, easy and relaxed living style.
