Q: Can a reader start now to get healthy and look great for an August vacation?
Maya: Yes! Health and weight loss is ultimately a long-term lifestyle change, but you can definitely see results in a month -- and that means motivation to continue!
Q: What are the top veggies and fruits to eat each day to stay fit and healthy?
Maya: My best advice on this is to eat a variety, rather than the same veggies and fruits each day. If you've ever heard the phrase "eat the rainbow", it's because it's true! Different colored veggies and fruits (red, orange, yellow, green, and even blue) contain different nutrients, which is why incorporating a variety ensures you get all the nutrients your body needs. Some of my personal favorite veggies and fruits to incorporate that variety are watermelon, bell peppers (all colors!), strawberries, carrots, cauliflower, avocado, zucchini, brussels sprouts, spinach, blueberries, and eggplant.
Q: Do you need to count calories?
Maya: It depends on your goals. If you are trying to lose weight, it comes down to a calorie deficit, but hormones like insulin play a role as well (which is why reducing carbs can often help, even if you're not doing keto). Some people find counting calories (and/or carbs) helpful, but many can have success by simply eliminating processed foods and sugar.
Q: What are the benefits to low carb and gluten free diets?
Maya: There are numerous benefits, including weight loss, stable mood and energy levels, blood sugar control, reduced cravings and appetite, controlling inflammation, skin improvements, digestive support, and more (source).
Q: Can you put together the tastiest barbecue plan for our readers?
Maya: Start with a fun appetizer, like Caprese skewers! Then grill a simple main dish, like grilled chicken kabobs or grilled salmon. Pair it with grilled veggies (such as grilled broccoli or grilled eggplant) and a cool salad (such as creamy cucumber salad or broccoli cauliflower salad). You can check

"This might be the keto bible! I received my copy two weeks ago, and I love this cookbook! I was nervous about trying Keto, because I love carbs; I never met a carb I didn't like, but the recipes provide realistic alternatives to the carbs you know and love. Also, the majority of the ingredients used are readily available at most grocery stores, and aren't ridiculously overpriced. I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone doing Keto, watching carbs, or just want to try something fresh and new!" -Maverick

The Easy Keto Carboholics’ Cookbook-is dedicated to easy recipes that make traditional "carbs" accessible while following a keto lifestyle! The cookbook includes a full-color photo, macro breakdown, tips and variations, storage and freezing instructions, and labels for recipes that have dairy-free, nut-free, and vegetarian options.
“People sometimes get overwhelmed with eating keto, but it's really pretty simple. The only piece that is absolutely necessary to reach ketosis is restricting carbohydrates - 25g net carbs per day is a good starting point, though some people who have metabolic resistance may need to do 20g, and others who are more active or have done it for a while can go higher (around 40g tends to work for me personally). Net carbs refer to the carbohydrates that our bodies can extract calories from and break down into sugar, so we calculate that by subtracting fiber, sugar alcohols (like erythritol), and allulose from the total carbohydrates on nutrition labels. While restricting carbs is the bare minimum, there's a lot more that can help ensure success, which is why I wrote a comprehensive guide for starting a keto diet,” Maya Krampf
