Easy Ways Of Maintaining The Cleanliness Of Your Pool Area

Do you have a swimming pool in your backyard but find it challenging to maintain its cleanliness? It is not as complicated as you think of it.

Every swimming pool has a different design. But to keep it refreshing and inviting for a long time, it needs to be cleaned regularly, no matter what type it is. First, you have to understand how it works to take care of it and maintain its cleanliness quickly.

Keep checking your pool from time to time to analyze its working and see if there is an issue. If you are tidying it up regularly, the life span of your pool will surely expand. Still, when you notice any problem with it, take help from a professional.

Following are some tips to help you keep your pool sparkling fresh for a long time:

1. Chemical Balance

Swimming pools need an optimum level of certain chemicals in them. You should keep checking their level once or twice a week or daily if the pool is used highly. If you notice an imbalance in chemicals, do change them shortly. The imbalance of chemicals causes uneven pool chemistry, which may affect your skin as well as your eyes. It can cause itchiness and red eyes.

Following are four types of chemical indicators for an ideal swimming pool chemistry:

Optimum pH Level

PH level ranges from 0 to 14. The normal pH of the water is seven that is neutral. A PH lower than seven means the water is acidic. While greater than seven is considered basic. The optimum pH level of pool water should be between 7.2 to 7.8. This acidity or alkalinity level prevents irritation on the skin and eyes while saving the pool equipment from eroding.

You can test the pH level by yourself at home by using testing kits. The simplest method would be using test strips. Take pool water in a pot and dip the strip in it for a few seconds. After some time, the strip changes color and then matches it with the color chart to see whether water is acidic or basic. Depending on the resultant pH, you understand what type of chemicals you need to add to the pool and in what quantities.

Total Alkalinity

Total alkalinity (TA) gives a quick idea about acidity or alkalinity levels of pool water. It acts as a pH buffer and prevents huge spikes in acid or base levels. Its optimum range is from 100 to 150 ppm.

Calcium Level

Too much calcium in the pool water indicates calcium hardness and results in scale formation. On the other hand, low levels cause corrosion of pool equipment. Thus, an ideal calcium concentration of about 220 to 350 parts.

High calcium levels can not be checked at home by a conventional testing kit, as we used to check pH. For this, you have to take some quantity of pool water to the local pool shop for testing calcium levels. For lower levels, you don't have to go to a shop for an examination.

Chlorination

Unstable weather conditions and people swimming in the pools can cause bacterial growth in the water. To prevent bacteria, the chemicals chlorine and bromine are commonly used as sanitizers.

For chlorination, there are two types of the method you can choose between. The first and the commonly used way is by adding chlorine manually. The other methods include the use of salt chlorinators and liquid chemical feeders.

Salt chlorinators are salt crystals that release water-soluble chlorine gas in the pool. At the same time, liquid chemical feeders are attached to the filtration system of the pool and release liquid chlorine or sometimes acid into the water.

2. Check Water Level

The ideal water level in the pool is as important as the chemical balance. You should check the water level after some time to avoid any problems.

The optimum water level is when water is half of the level of the skimmer. Too little water makes the skimmer dry. While excess water can disturb the skimming process and results in the accumulation of debris and germs inside the water.

If you notice the water level is dropping below the optimum point, fill it with the help of an ordinary water pipe. In the opposite case, remove the excess water before it causes a problem in the skimmer. But don't forget to check the chemical balance whenever the water quantity is changed in the pool.

3. Clean Out The Skimmer Basket

Over time, debris like leaves, dirt, and dust particles accumulate in the pool water. We use a skimmer basket and a skimmer placed on either side of the pool to remove them. We should empty the basket after some time so that the contaminants are thrown out. In this way, the skimmer works efficiently for a long time, and you can enjoy swimming in clean and germ-free water.

4. Vacuum The Pool

The skimmers work by removing the debris from the surface of the water. For cleaning out the waste from the ground, you will need a vacuum pool cleaner.

Now pool cleaning is much easier than ever. In markets, robotic pool cleaner are available that have much more options than traditional vacuum pool cleaners. You don't have to perform scrubbing manually, as they are capable enough to scrub the wall and floors to remove grime automatically. Thus, you get more time to enjoy your pool rather than cleaning it up.

5. Brush The Sides of The Pool

To avoid significant problems because of debris and calcium deposition on the walls, use a brush to clean the pool sides. The selection of brush should be according to the type of material of the pool walls. For concrete walls, use a stiff brush so that you can clean them quickly and thoroughly. For fiberglass or vinyl made walls, use a softer brush. Also, you should clean the stairs with the help of a brush.

Whether you're going to construct a new swimming pool or are a pool owner for some years, it is crucial to upkeep. It will keep your pool up and running for a long time. Moreover, it makes you and your family enjoy swimming in clean and clear water free of germs.
