The backyard is every home owner's sanctuary, a place to unwind and play in the great outdoors. It can also be the place where your children play, where you tend to your garden, work and get sweaty, find privacy, or organically strike up a conversation with the neighbors. However, none of those things can happen unless you are diligent in taking care of your backyard sanctuary.
Declutter
One thing to consider is decluttering your backyard, especially if you've let it become the storage space for all kinds of equipment, supplies, and eyesores. Instead, it would be best if you considered getting rid of any equipment or miscellaneous tractors or car parts or other items that are earmarked for the dump, but you haven't gotten around to it. You will also need to look at the trees and other vegetation like bushes and hedges that may have become overgrown due to neglect.
You won't be able to truly relax and enjoy your space until you've taken it back from nature. As suggested by the folks at A&J Tree Service, it may be just as simple as cutting the lawn and trimming the hedges or pulling in expert help to cut and remove the trees that have become dangerously dilapidated. Like anything else, trees need to be nurtured and cared for, and can also become sick and need attention.
Just Add Water
A classic addition to any zen nature space is the water feature. There's just something about a pond or a fountain, whether you fill it with koi fish or not, that helps soothe and relax your nerves. Even if a water feature feels too extravagant, a simple birdbath can transform an outdoor space. If you want to split the difference, why not consider a hot tub to lean into the relaxation aspect? A more massive hot tub also becomes a fun group activity for outdoor parties, another reason to spruce up your backyard.
Shade
While getting outside for some sun is what draws people out, too much sun is not good. If your entire backyard is open, it can begin to feel more like the Sahara in summer than an oasis. You may want to consider adding some awnings or umbrellas with some outdoor furniture to create a refuge from the harsh UV rays. A gazebo or pergola can also quickly transform a relatively open space into an adult playground. A gazebo can also create an excellent focal point to your backyard and become a favorite place for breakfast or a place to catch up on your favorite book.
Fire and Light
Adding a fire pit is an incredibly affordable way to spruce up a plain backyard and provide an opportunity to have a party; what's better than inviting friends for a hotdog roasted over an open flame and long conversations at dusk. While you are at it, why not add some outdoor lights or tiki torches to create an atmosphere after dark?
Flowers
This one is obvious, but nothing adds color and fragrance like flowers. The combination and varieties are seemingly endless, and if you are strategic, you can pick ones that keep away certain pest insects or attract pleasing birds and bees. If you suck at gardening, you can even try sunflowers, marigolds, and pansies, which are considered some of the hardiest breeds that even the most inexperienced green-thumbs couldn't kill. Marigolds and lavender, and basil can help keep mosquitoes as the plants act as a natural mosquito repellent.
Privacy
If you find your backyard is open to too many eyes, you may want to consider privacy panels, wood fencing with latticework that helps make you feel like you're in your little world. Hedges and vines can also add some green, block out the world, and combine with a tall, sturdy fence; you have a recipe for a more secluded sanctuary. Trees are another obvious choice when it comes to blocking out the view of prying eyes.
The Path Taken
Another surefire way to create some drama and beauty in your backyard is to add a garden path. Clearing out space on the lawn for mulch or stones and then laying down some larger flat stepping stones that lead you from the house to the fire pit or other destination can transform your backyard space's feel and aesthetic. Speaking of which, consider a large outdoor rug underneath paving stones to create a fun pop of color in your otherwise naturally green-brown outdoor palette.
In the end, there are so many ways to turn your drab, dry backyard into a haven for rest, relaxation, and creativity; you need to have some imagination to see what could be.
