Ready to try your hand at vertical gardening?
It is the latest craze in haute horticulture: lifting plants off the ground and hanging them as living wall art.
With these three fresh ideas you, too, can create your own fabulous outdoor artwork, or add a natural touch to an indoor space.
Idea 1 – Grow natural artwork

Vertical Succulent Garden DIY Panels, Flora Grubb, $79 each; floragrubb.com
You don’t have to be an expert gardener like Flora Grubb to create your own lush living walls. Just use one of her 20-inch DIY panels (or link 9 together as shown above).
-Start by selecting plants from your local nursery in a variety of textures and hues.
-After, lay your panel down on a flat surface and nestle plants into each of its small cells. You will want to allow the plants to grow in that position for at least a month before hanging to let their roots take hold.
-Mount your panels securely on a sturdy outdoor wall or fence – they can get heavy, weighing up to 70 pounds each when soaked with water.
Idea 2 – Load up a tall shelf with leafy greens

Vertical Garden, Williams-Sonoma, $400; williams-sonoma.com
Bring the farmers market into your kitchen by loading up this smart shelf unit with your favorite herbs. Designed for indoor or outdoor use, this freestanding planter features a drainage system that distributes moisture to each of its 40 planting cells. Simply pour water into the opening on top, and the hidden collector tray will catch all excess runoff.
Idea 3 – Vertical Garden + Storage

Big Happy Family, Urbio, $170; myurbio.com
Bring a lot of green and organization into your home with these lightweight pots. Available in various sizes and made from recyclable polypropylene, these pots are easy to detach and reattach, thanks to their large magnets. This allows you to group and reconfigure your wall until you have just the right composition for your vertical gardening scheme.
