Leave it to those who are more tech-savvy to bring a lost reader up to speed. Amazon’s recent release of its second generation Kindle Paperwhite was met with positive reviews. The hardware upgrades and overall development of the latest e-reader was relatively modest, less the important addition of front-lit technology for page illumination. Slight changes may suggest Amazon felt pretty good about their original product, though the lighting upgrade will definitely make bright competitors like Barnes & Noble’s Nook and Kobo’s Aura a little less competitive.
The name lives up to its name—especially in the dark—with exceptional clarity and impressive white balance over the six-inch reading space. At less than eight ounces, holding the new Kindle Paperwhite is nothing like holding a real book. While technology prefers the cool, smooth softness of modernity, real books will always have the texture of antiquity. Someone gifted me the Paperwhite, or else I very well may have gone another 10 years before giving up my home library and boxes of books in self-storage. But the truth is, after just a few relaxed sessions, I can honestly say I’m hooked.
I doubt that anything will ever replace a reader’s desire to show-off a sophisticated stack of Hemingway—or, let’s be honest, J.K. Rowing—in the home library. But for convenience, clarity and I’ll say it again, convenience, nothing could have shocked me more than how much I love this e-reader.
