3 Things Every Student Should Take Care of When Moving to Southampton for College

Southampton has some of the most popular schools and universities in the country, which is why the city sees a good number of students arrive here from all around the UK every year. If you happen to be one of them, congratulations on making it to Southampton! However, moving to a new city isn’t always the easiest, especially if you don’t have family there. To help make your transition from your hometown to Southampton as smooth and economic as possible, here are three things that you should take care of before everything else.

Accommodation

As mentioned earlier, the University Town is a hotbed for outside students, so finding student accommodation in Southampton isn’t always the easiest agenda on the book, although it is the most important one of them all. Thankfully, you can find student accommodation here before you leave your hometown which is all luxury accommodation for students with a bigger budget. It is advisable to book the apartment/room as soon as possible, because the best ones are always taken up first.

Luggage

Since you are not just coming to the city for a few days, it makes sense to plan your luggage well ahead. Of course, you cannot possibly take everything you might need, nor can you anticipate everything that you will require down the line, but a general idea should help you to avoid unnecessary expenses. For example, once you have chosen a place to stay, talk with the caretaker/supervisor or the renting party to find out about the facilities which you can expect to find there, such as utensils, fridge, cookware, etc. An early visit to check the place out before renting it is ideal because that will give you a much clearer idea on what to bring and what to skip. Also, pack in your umbrella and trench coat, because Southampton may not see the most rain in UK, but it can rain for days on end here and on some weeks, you will have no other option but to go out in the rain.

Food

Southampton is an all-night city really and that is true in more ways than one. The good news here is that food is not a problem in the city, since you will never be short of options even in the dead of night or the early hours of the morning! The real problem is, ordering food from restaurants and diners every day is probably not going to do anyone’s health any good, but it will most certainly wreak havoc on the bank account of the average student! Learn to cook if you don’t know how to and learn it fast. When you start cooking your own food on most of the days, you will likely end up saving a small fortune by skipping the restaurant bills.

The living costs in Southampton are certainly not as cheap as they are in Belfast or Derby, but if you are coming in from London or Oxford, it is safe to say that you will appreciate the reduction in rent and lifestyle expenses, especially since the cost of University education in Southampton is not really cheap by any stretch of the imagination!
