Create a Cosier Home with These Winter Décor Tips

From changing to thicker fabrics to completely re-doing your entire color palette, the arrival of winter brings the opportunity to introduce a refresh to your living space. As the days grow shorter and colder, transforming your décor can add some much-needed warmth and extra comfort to your home.

To help with your retreat from the chilly outdoors, we’ve put together some tips and ideas for creating a space with a cozy theme. Read on to find some winter inspiration.

Introduce “Warm” Colors

While adding cozier colors won’t make you feel physically warmer, it can be surprising how much of an effect it can have psychologically. It will definitely make your home feel more inviting. Whilst the traditional winter décor often features cool and neutral tones, you can still add some feeling of warmth with a few small splashes of alternative tones.

Colors to look for include rich and deep hues such as burgundy, forest green, or even deep navy. Warm colors include yellow tones, oranges, and reds, but depending on the shade, this can also include some greens and pinky purples. Search for images of color wheels for more ideas, as some opinions can vary.

Accent Pieces and Upholstery

Once you’ve got an idea for colors, apply them to accent pieces like your seasonal throw pillows, curtains, and area rugs. You can even try creating your own throw pillows, or go even further if your upholstery and crafting skills allow it. If you’ve got an old sofa you don’t want to get rid of, why not refresh it with a brand new fabric, new padding foam, or even some new sofa feet that match the color and vibe your winter refresh provides?

Choosing Textures and Materials

When buying new accent pieces, choose materials that make sense in winter. You’ll likely put thin and light curtains and quilts away in favor of thicker and heavier materials. Thick curtains can help keep warmth in.

Drape blankets and throw them over your couch, chair, or bed. Look for soft materials, made from faux fur, fleece, or a chunky knit. This will instantly add an extra inviting feeling. And means you can grab a blanket for warmth at any time, anywhere you’re sitting.

Lay down soft, fluffy rugs to create extra warmth for your feet, they’ll also provide a bit of insulation to your floors. This is especially the case if you have laminate flooring or wooden floorboards. You can also put down some draught excluders by the bottom of doors for insulation purposes. Try to match your draught excluder with your rugs, or the rest of your décor. They come in many forms.

Lighting

Evenings are darker, so get your floor lamps and table lamps out. Use them to create soft lighting that makes you feel relaxed after a long day. For additional light, you may also want to use strategically placed string lights. Other options include introducing dimmer switches or smart light bulbs with dimming capabilities to your rooms.

You can also bring in some candlelight for an even more warming atmosphere. Scented candles with wintery fragrances like cinnamon, pine, and vanilla can add to the sensory experience.

Winter Wood

If buying furniture specifically for winter, such as a Christmas dinner table, look for something wooden. Wood adds a natural warmth to your decor, so whether it’s a coffee table, side table, or bookshelves, you can create a rustic feel. Wooden picture frames and trays will also add to this particular aesthetic. You can personalize by displaying art, hanging up posters of your favorite winter or Christmas movies, or by adding pictures of your family and cherished memories.

Patterns

For items such as your throw pillows or blankets, choose winter-themed patterns such as snowflakes, plaid, or even text, quotes, or sayings like “Let it snow!”.

Make Warmth Part of Your Décor

You should also be able to find items that both provide heating and match your wintery aesthetic. If you need an electric heater, look for an electric stove. They’re effective, come in a range of different prices for every budget, and won’t break the illusion of your perfect winter aesthetic. Along with this, you can purchase yourself a fluffy faux fur or plaid patterned electric blanket for even more heat.

Winter Greens

If you’re a plant fan, then you can place winter plants around your space. You can also decorate using things like pinecones and evergreen branches. Wreaths are also great, especially for Christmas time.
