With over 65 miles of trails in the San Dieguito River Park––ranging from flat and easy to steep and heart-pumping––there’s something for everyone looking for outdoor activity. But if you’re new to the area or to the park, you might not know where to start.
The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy’s variety of recreational programming is a great way to get to know the River Park, from the coast of Del Mar to the summit of Volcan Mountain near Julian.
Furry Friends Hikes
Offered approximately every other month, these organized hikes are specifically for pet-owners (mostly dog-owners) looking to branch out from their normal neighborhood walks. Your pup will love the fresh air and chance to explore some new smells. The Conservancy asks participants to bring a donation in the form of pet food or treats to the Helen Woodward Animal Center. Furry Friends Hikes are family-friendly and typically rated easy to moderate.
Exec Treks
Get to know the River Park with the Conservancy’s own Executive Director, Trish Boaz! Every other month, Boaz leads a group of trekkers on different trails throughout the park, sharing her knowledge and insight about the flora and fauna, plus Conservancy projects, along the way. Hikes vary in distance and difficulty.
Yoga at the Birdwing
Bring your mat to the Birdwing Open Air Classroom on the third Sunday of every month for yoga instructor Susan McCrea’s all-levels yoga classes. The peaceful release from the yoga is enhanced by the natural surroundings of the San Dieguito Lagoon in Del Mar. The classes are free, though donations are gratefully accepted.
Trails and Ales
This popular hiking series pairs two of the best things about North County: an abundance of craft breweries and preserved open spaces. The Conservancy partners with the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy, The Escondido Creek Conservancy, and the Volcan Mountain Foundation to put on Trails and Ales twice a year (spring and fall). The groups take turns leading hikes and visiting a local craft brewery, where hikers get to replenish their electrolytes with a complimentary tasting flight or pint.
Exploring Our Sense of Place
This unique, eight-month program is for people really looking to deepen their knowledge of the River Park and build a personal connection with nature and their surroundings. The program runs from October through May of each year and includes eight guided excursions in the River Park. Each excursion explores a different area and focuses on a different topic, ranging from water resources and geology to native wildflowers.
