Just Bought Your Dream Car? Here’s How to Kit Out Your Garage

There are two types of people in this world. Those that save money and those that spend it. Yes, saving and investing are rational choices, but at some point, you have to ask yourself, “What am I saving for?”

For most people, buying a dream car is not the highest of priorities when you have a mortgage and a family to take care of. However, when years pass and your kids move out, you will likely find yourself with some extra money. In such a scenario, the thought of owning a 70s Mustang Fastback starts to look tempting, doesn’t it?

You discuss buying it with your spouse (or not), and before you know it, you bite the bullet and own the dream car you always wanted.

Congratulations! The joy can be unlike anything you have experienced before. You park your new wheels in the garage, and that’s when you notice something else. Your garage is in no shape to be the home of a car so beautiful. You realize that it’s time to kit out your garage the right way.

Here’s how you can do that:

1. Get a Car Lift

Most people don’t stop once they get their dream cars. They usually have a list of upgrades and modifications in mind. This might range from installing a turbocharger to reworking the suspension. Regardless of what modifications you have in mind, a car lift will make tinkering way easier.

You wouldn’t have to drive all the way to a mechanic to have major work done. This saves both time and money. For this reason, a car lift should be the first upgrade you think about. They can range anywhere from $1500 to $3,500 for a two-post car lift and about $5,000 for a four-post car lift.

Before getting a car lift, you ought to do some research. Weight capacity and ceiling height are two important factors that will determine the type of car lift you can install. Also, ensure that you have a suitable power supply and that the lift and its installation meet safety standards and local regulations.

2. Invest in Extra Security

Depending on the safety of your neighborhood, it may be a good idea to invest in some garage security. It would be tragic if you spent a lot of money on your dream car, only for someone to try to break into your garage and steal it. This happens more often than you think. Every year, there are close to half a million car thefts in the U.S.

It doesn’t take much to keep your car safe at home. A simple investment into a modern garage door with smart security features can be all you need. According to Atlantic Ocean Group, the choices for garage doors are many. From outdoor keypads to extra security features, it’s all possible.

Many of these security systems offer motion detection, remote monitoring, and contacting the police if a theft is detected. Sure, some of the high-end security features may be a little pricey, but you should be able to find secure garage door options for every budget.

3. Upgrade Your Tools and Storage Spaces

As you work on your sweet new ride, you are going to want to use better tools. Be warned, though, a lot of people find out too late that tool shopping is a deep, deep rabbit hole.

You decide to do some research on the best tools for car work. The next thing you know, it’s 3:00 AM, and you are deep in an obscure subreddit, arguing about why chrome-molybdenum impact sockets are superior to anything else.

If this scratches your hobby itch, well, more power to you. That said, when you are spending money on expensive tools, it’s a good idea to start storing them right. Consider investing in a stainless steel pegboard, cabinets, and drawers (with 3D-printed cutout frames) for storage.

Wrapping Up

It may be tempting to go all in and start upgrading left and right. However, be wise with your money. Prices add up rapidly when you want to start tinkering around with expensive vintage cars. Consider setting up a timeline so that you can structure your upgrades in a way that isn’t going to blow a hole in your wallet instantly.

Finally, no matter how enjoyable it may be to spend time in your man-cave garage, remember not to isolate yourself. You get to enjoy your investments when they are your respite from the world. Thus, spend time with family and engage in other hobbies as well.
