Living in a house that looks and feels worthy of being featured in a glossy home and décor magazine is every homeowner’s dream. However, people tend to focus so much on appearance that they forget to take into account how their home’s design will impact their lifestyle.

Keeping a home in top-notch condition requires quite a bit of effort. Regular cleaning and fixing, roof inspections, painting, or gardening, are just some of the tasks on a homeowner’s maintenance checklist. The more elaborate and complex a house is, the harder it is to maintain. So, you have to ask yourself how these tasks will fit into your plans.

If you want to spend less time cleaning, fixing, or doing other tedious household chores and more time relaxing and enjoying your place, creating a low-maintenance home can make life a lot easier for you. But how can you achieve that without compromising on style and character? It’s all about choosing the right features and elements, so here are a few aspects to consider if you want to create a home you’ll love and cut down on maintenance work.

Ditch the carpets

It’s true that using carpets throughout the house can provide warmth and comfort, and for many, they’re a vital interior design element. You can also find good carpets at fairly reasonable prices, so they don’t require a large investment. However, it’s just as true that carpets are a breeding ground for dust, dirt, and microbes and they’re a nightmare to clean, especially if you have pets and kids running around the house all day long.

The better option is to choose hardwood floors. They might cost you more, but they’ll last a lifetime and all you need to keep them clean is to vacuum and mop them regularly. They will require refinishing, but that’s a task you’ll only have to do every ten years or so. Besides, hardwood floors can look just as great as carpets, if not more so, not to mention they’re timeless and can fit any design style.

Focus on quality

When buying items for your home, whether it’s appliances, gadgets, furniture, decorations, or accessories, keep in mind that most often than not you’re going to get what you pay for. In other words, if you purchase cheap items, as a way to save money, you’ll probably end up spending more effort and money on repairs and maintenance. On the flip side, if you choose quality products, even if they are on the pricier side, you’ll be able to enjoy them for longer and worry less about maintenance or repairs.

It can be tempting to go for the cheaper alternative, but you have to think about the future. If you calculate how much owning a low-priced item will cost you in the long run, you’ll come to realize that buying something that’s pricier but high-quality is the more cost-effective option.

Choose low-maintenance furniture pieces

Furniture pieces play a significant role in a home, both from a practical and an aesthetical perspective. These days, furniture options are virtually endless, as you can choose from a wide variety of sizes, shapes, designs, and styles. So, you might have a difficult time picking the right pieces for your home.

But if you want to enjoy greater peace of mind, we recommend choosing low-maintenance furniture pieces like headboard-less beds (fewer surfaces to clean), an easy clean sofa, or darker furniture. This will significantly reduce the amount of time you’ll need to dedicate to cleaning and maximize relaxation time.

Don’t overestimate your gardening skills

If you have a garden or a backyard, you’re one lucky homeowner. But tending to your garden can be both a blessing and a curse, especially if you have a large outdoor area to care for. You can dream about creating a green paradise, but be careful not to overestimate your gardening skills and underestimate the time it takes to keep a garden well-manicured.

In this situation, we suggest refraining from creating elaborate landscape designs, with countless plants crowding every corner of your garden. If you’re not exactly a green thumb, plant only as many plants as you think you can keep alive with minimum maintenance and choose resilient species. The same goes for indoor greenery, where picking hard-to-kill houseplants can save you a lot of trouble.

Select durable materials

Another effective way to reduce maintenance work is to choose the right materials for every surface of your home, whether we’re talking about floors, countertops, cabinets, or furniture. A bit of research can go a long way in helping you find the most suitable solutions for your home.

For example, when it comes to kitchen countertops, marble and granite are great options from an aesthetical point of view, but they can stain or etch easily without proper maintenance. Quartz, on the other hand, is a more suitable alternative as it can withstand scratches, stains, and high heat. Selecting stain proof fabric for upholstery is also a great idea. These fabrics use advanced technology to prevent liquids from soaking in, making them easier to maintain and ensuring a longer lifespan for your furniture pieces.

Opt for practical storage

No matter how large a house is, there never seems to be enough space to store all your assets. That’s because most homeowners don’t employ the right storage solutions, and they struggle with keeping their spaces tidy and organized. Needless to say, dealing with clutter all the time can easily get frustrating and turn into a very time-consuming household chore.

Enter smart storage solutions, such as purchasing multipurpose furniture, opting for bespoke built-in shelving, building storage into the walls, utilizing under the bed space, and so on. These solutions can help you make the most of every inch in every room, clearing up the space and making your home look a lot bigger than it actually is.
