Slightly Stoopid: Perfect 33 Foundation Benefit Concert
In 1995, on the beaches of Ocean Beach, a band was created that would take the city they call home by storm. Slightly Stoopid has not only risen in popularity in San Diego, but nationwide as one of the most well-known reggae bands. It was no surprise that their show at Belly Up, October 23rd, was sold-out.
The show itself was a benefit show for the Perfect 33 Foundation. As #33 on the New York Yankees, former MLB pitcher David Wells, pitched a perfect game on May 17, 1998. David Wells career was decorated with awards, making him one of the best in his time in the Major Leagues. Wells, after an amazing career, came home to San Diego and wanted to give back to his hometown. Him and his wife Nina created The Perfect 33 Foundation to help young athletes develop their passions and military personnel for their service.
What better band to choose than one born and bred in San Diego, such as Wells. Slightly Stoopid was the perfect band for this benefit concert as they still hold San Diego close to their hearts and continue to live on the beaches that inspired them. As well as the perfect band, Wells also chose a perfect location. Belly Up is a clean, well-designed North County favorite venue with little to no lines at each of the bars, even being a sold out show.
The doors opened at 7pm but no one arrived until around 9pm, with most knowing that Slightly Stoopid likes to have their fun backstage before. The special guest was a DJ who played mostly electronic remixes to older songs. When 9:30 came around the standing area in front of the stage filled. Jumping out with the energy that has kept people coming to see them for years, the band started out strong. The crowd went nuts as a cloud of smoke rose above them. Not surprising considering the bands reputation as big supporters of the legalization of recreational marijuana.
With an hour-long set, the band made sure to play crowd favorites. Slightly Stoopid is always a crowd pleaser, especially in their hometown. Here in San Diego we have a lot of incredible talent, and showcasing it for a good cause worked out in the best way possible. A sold-out show brings in great revenue for a great San Diego cause. The two forces came together to give fans an amazing benefit show.
