Over 1 million citizens are currently serving in the one of the branches of the United States military. With the lives of those serving and their family members greatly affected by the stressors that come along with the job, the question arises of what resources are available to those transitioning back to civilian life. Organizations like the Three Wise Men Foundation work actively to make a difference in all facets of the lives of veterans––be it from post-traumatic stress to veteran homelessness and everything in between. As an active duty Marine, Beau Wise and Foundation Founder Nathan Fletcher both live by the message their organization stands for––surviving combat and prospering in the peace that follows.
For those unfamiliar with the story of the Wise brothers, Jeremy Wise joined the Navy following the September 11th attacks on our country. Wise would later become a Navy SEAL, where he would stand amongst the greats of Special Operations with brother and Army Green Beret Ben Wise. Beau Wise followed suit when he joined the Marine Corps Infantry. Between the three brothers, over four cumulative years were spent abroad serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. Tragically, the lives of Jeremy and Ben were claimed in combat two years apart. Today, their legacy is carried on and honored by Beau Wise as he continues the fight for the new generation of veterans welcomed home.
The Three Wise Men Foundation is actively working with Assembly Member Jacqui Irwin and Governor Jerry Brown in introducing legislation to decriminalize attempted suicide in the California military which will include the Army National Guard, the Air National Guard, the State Military Reserve, as well as the Naval Militia. In the words of Nathan Fletcher, former Assembly Member and Marine Corps Staff Sergeant, "this legislation sends a clear message to all service members that are experiencing mental health struggles that it’s ok to ask for help." The legislation addresses the concerns facing fear of prosecution and promotes mental health support without any obstacles for our service members.
For those looking to support our troops and aid the vets, take part in the Veteran’s Day Tribute, a brutal workout to raise funds for our service members as well as get you in shape. Those looking to get involved have the option of registering as an individual or joining a team for a little more competition. The workout itself? A relentless combination of snatches, burpees, and box jumps guaranteed to get your muscles aching as you compete to take home the Three Wise Men Cup. Those who may have reservations about the workout regimen have the option of donating to an affiliate or individual to help express your support by other means.
Take part in riding alongside the pros of the 2017 Amgen Tour of California by participating in the Three Wise Men Memorial Bike ride to help bring families and communities together to raise awareness of these issues. Participants will have the options of 30, 60, or 90-mile routes that will coincide with Stage 1 of the tour. Those that are unable to join from across the country can sign up and stage their own ride in their community to help show support.
In 2015, the Three Wise Men Foundation began an initiative called "Step Up 4 Vets." Nathan Fletcher will continue taking groups of veterans and foundation supporters on international summit expeditions to conquer some of the highest peaks in the world. These spiritual journeys will help instill a sense of confidence in vets and help them to succeed in the civilian world with others sharing similar stories. This is one of many ways Fletcher and his team are helping vets heal.
