Being a first-time mom is exciting, especially when you're shopping for your baby's needs. But the list can be a bit overwhelming. Not to mention, there will be people who'll chime in with long lists of items you should buy for your newborn.
Unfortunately, baby products don't come cheap. That said, you'll need to decide on your needs carefully and wants for your baby. To help you shop right, here are some must-have items that will be very useful as you welcome your newborn.
Breast Pumps
Major health organizations around the world recommend breastfeeding for at least a year. However, maternity leave is not enough for most. And it's hard for breastfeeding mothers because some need to go back to work quickly. However, hands free breast pumps can help. They can give so many benefits for new moms that will help them go back to work fast. With breast pumps, you can build your milk supply even before your baby starts needing more. It allows you to store the extra for later too.
With enough milk stock, you can quickly go back to work while providing breastmilk for your baby. The best part of it is that you can also help other moms. Not all moms can produce enough milk for their babies. And if you have breast pumps, you have more opportunities to help them by donating your extra milk.
Milk Storage Containers
Of course, if you'll be pumping, you will need some milk storage containers too. This is because there might come a time that you produce more milk than your baby needs. To prevent it from going to waste, you need to store them properly, hence, the milk storage containers.
This will also help alleviate your concerns about oversupply or undersupply of breast milk. It can help with keeping track of your baby's actual milk requirement too.
And if you plan on donating your milk, these containers will come in handy. It will help with storing your expressed milk properly as they're transported to other locations.
Bibs and Burp Cloths
Many first-time mothers often get confused as to which one to get between bibs and burp cloths. Some prefer the latter more; hence they don't buy bibs anymore. But you'll need both of them.
For starters, bibs are pieces of cloth that protect your baby's outfit. Babies are messy eaters, and the food or their milk can stain their clothes and parts of their body, which often get stinky.
On the other hand, burp cloths offer more coverage on larger areas if your baby drools or vomit, especially when you're carrying them. You can also use it to clean up their mess, such as snot, drools, etc.
Both of them can help protect clothes and make cleaning more accessible, especially when you're outside. That said, try to get both of them as much as you can.
Nipple Creams
Breastfeeding is beneficial not just for your baby but for you too. It lowers your risk of breast cancer, promotes faster weight loss, fewer urinary tract infections, and more.
However, it has its cons too. This includes dryness, cracking, itchiness, and bleeding on the nipples, to name a few, especially in the first few months of nursing. Even so, nipple creams work wonders. It gives relief before, during, and even after feedings.
Baby Proofing Items
As your baby grows, they will start to get curious about their surroundings. That's why you often see babies crawling or walking, exploring their environment, and even trying to eat everything they touch (also known as baby mouthing).
This stage is crucial for their learning and development. Plus, it helps their bodies become stronger and healthier.
However, this can also be worrying as they might touch something that could hurt them, make them sick, or even cause their lives. Thus, you also need to prepare baby-proofing items even before your baby starts exploring. This will give protection to your baby as they explore the world around them. Baby gates are particularly essential for stairs, as they help prevent babies from falling down. You can start by covering all sharp edges and corners of your furniture with padding or bumpers to baby-proof your home. You should also make sure that your cupboards, drawers, especially where dangerous chemicals are stored, have locks. It would be best if you also kept an eye on your looped cords. Most importantly, cover your outlets to prevent electrocution.
Having a new baby is exciting, especially when it comes to shopping for their needs. But, be sure not to get overly excited about buying your baby's needs. Only buy the essentials.
