San Francisco is one of California’s top places to visit. It’s best known for being the home of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, which spans the San Francisco Bay. It’s also known for its cable cars, nightlife, and dramatic natural scenery. There’s a lot to see and do in this beautiful city, which is why it helps to know what options are available to get from the San Francisco airport to downtown.
Shared Shuttles or Private Transfers
The least stressful way to get to Downtown San Francisco from the airport is an SFO airport transfer. You can choose between a private transfer or a shared shuttle, but choosing an airport transfer is efficient, safe, and accessible. Booking an airport transfer guarantees that you will have a dedicated professional driver awaiting your arrival at the airport who will get you to your destination.
Taxi
Taxis are a popular impromptu option, however, they’re not always reliable. Airports are a favorite haunt of taxi drivers because they know there will always be a steady stream of fares who are trying to get to their next destination. Unfortunately, taxi drivers are known for some of their predatory tactics and careless driving. There are plenty of excellent taxi drivers who are pleasant and professional, as well, but travelers never know what kind of taxi they’re going to get or just how well the driver knows the city. And if you’re traveling with a group or your family, you may need more than one taxi to accommodate your travel group.
Public Transportation
The BART train, Caltrain, and SamTrans are affordable transportation methods to get to downtown San Francisco. It’s cheap and can get you to just about anywhere downtown that tourists want to go. Although it’s pocket friendly transportation, it can be cumbersome to take public transportation with luggage. Another factor to consider with buses and trains is the proximity you will have to share with other passengers. If you’re traveling as a group or have a larger family, you’ll need to take care not to get separated. You’ll also need to make sure you’re reading the maps carefully so that you end up where you intend to be. Keep in mind that public transportation runs on schedules and is not on-demand travel like taxis and transfers. You’ll need to account for these time tables in your travel plans.
Keep in mind, BART doesn’t travel as far as the metro does, so you may wind up farther away from some of San Francisco’s main attractions than you’d like. And if you’re staying in a hotel north of downtown, it will be necessary to take additional transportation, like Muni bus, to reach your accommodations.
Traveling can be stressful at times, but when you’re well prepared and have done some extra planning, your trip to San Francisco will go a lot more smoothly. However you choose to get around the city is up to you and what makes you feel most comfortable. Just remember to enjoy yourself while you visit.
