Sharlene Borromeo is one upcoming designer you need to watch. In high school she was never into fashion and decided to go on to Fashion Career College as a Business Student where she received a Fashion Business & Technology Degree. During her studies she had the awesome opportunity to intern with the International Fashion Designer, Dame Zandra Rhodes. One day they were hand painting on leather and Zandra told her that she had a gift and should consider going into design. Taking a cue from her mentor Borromeo decided to return to school so she could learn how to sew. After two years of study Sharlene graduated with a Fashion Design & Technology Degree and began the plus size label A’doreus. This fashion label is a lifestyle meant for a’doring and embracing diversity.
The plus size market is very much under represented considering that 67% of women are over size 14. The competition sells plus sizegarments that are made from knits. Knits don’t provide necessary coverage or conceal the problem areas. Each piece of clothing for A’doreus is custom made with woven fabrics and these garments have no stretch. Borromeo works with each client creating an extra special design for them. She specializes in hand making garments that fit women’s curves.
Borromeo has been showing her collections at Fashion Week San Diego for the past 3 years. The 2013 "Key to my Heart" Collection was made with printed fabric that was created on an iPhone. Borromeo collaborated with the San Diego artist, Urban Fish Design, LLC to create this stunning collection. Last year she was voted the Top Designer during the weeklong celebration at Fashion Week San Diego. Returning this year for the 4th year she will be showing her next collection, which will be called ‘Light Beyond Darkness’. The line will be black with pops of coral and turquoise color underneath. Preparing for the next Fashion Week San Diego, Sharlene participated in the Designer Showcase at Harrah’s on March 14. Each designer showcased one piece of his or her upcoming collection that will be shown at Fashion Week San Diego.
In an effort to find balance in her life Borromeo wants to be a role model and follow in the footsteps of her mentor. She has been connecting with the community and has received recognition as a result. The Silayan Filipina National Organization presented the Benefit Gala honoring Filipinas in the Arts on December 20, 2014. At this Gala, Borromeo received a Proclamation from the City and was honored as a Pilipino for her work in the visual arts. The second award was from the California Assembly and State Senate for her outstanding achievement and contribution in the arts, devoted community service, and inspiration to our youth & community. "Looking to the future my grand plan is talking with people and connecting and making timeless garments for special occasions". Sharlene Borromeo wants to leave women embracing their fuller figure. The next event to see these designs up close and personal is the Art of Fashion on April 20th at the Timken Museum of Art at 7pm. Borremeo will showcase 2 pieces. Following that date will be Viva La V Series on April 23rd at the La Valencia Hotel beginning at noon.
